You can reach Bordeaux from the United Kingdom on flights from London, Manchester or Birmingham. Bordeaux is located in southwest France and is that region?s largest city with a population of one million people in the metropolitan area. Its airport is the Bordeaux-Merignac Airport
Bordeaux?s climate makes it popular with visitors. While its summers tend to be hot and long, the rest of the year is mild. Bordeaux is a port city, and about nine million tons of goods pass through the area each year. The port area is especially popular with visitors, who take advantage of the mild weather and sit outside enjoying the view. The main railway station is the Gare de Bordeaux Saint-Jean. Visitors can take a high speed train from the station to Paris in about three hours. There is also a tram, buses and taxis for visitors as well.
Ask anyone to name one thing they know about Bordeaux and most likely they will mention wine. Bordeaux is one of the top wine producing areas in the world, with almost 300,000 miles of vineyards. Its red wines are made from a blend of grapes, most commonly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Red wine produced in Bordeaux is commonly referred to as claret. White wine and sweeter dessert wines are also produced in Bordeaux, but white wine makes up only about one-tenth of the wine production in Bordeaux. The area?s annual wine production is about 700 million bottles a year. Some of the world?s most expensive wines are produced in Bordeaux, but so are everyday table wines that are just as good. Almost all of the wines produced in Bordeaux are blended wines.
Not just world famous for its wine industry, Bordeaux also is home to research centers for laser technology and a booming aeronautic industry. Both of these industries employ thousands of workers. Travel and tourism also serve as an economic engine, largely, of course, due to popularity of the vineyards and winemaking tours.
Bordeaux also boasts one of the largest collections of eighteenth century buildings in Europe. Among its more famous structures are the Church of the Holy Cross, Place de la Bourse, the Saint Andre Cathedral, the Seruin Basilica, the Church of St. Pierre, and the St. Michel Basilica.
Visitors can also enjoy Bordeaux?s parks and gardens, its many festivals, shops, restaurants and cafes. A major culture center, the city is also home to the National Opera of Bordeaux. The city is the first in France to build an architecture and research center.
The center is called Arc en Reve and it remains one of the most respected and popular architecture and research centers in all of France. Bordeaux is also home to a lively music, with plenty of live music venues located throughout the city for visitors to enjoy.
The climate, the architecture, the culture, and the wines make Bordeaux an outstanding place to visit and enjoy.
