There are three main types of pruning saws in vogue. The first is the bushman or bow pruning saw with removal blades. This can be got in three sizes: 24 inch, 30 inch and 36 inch, and the spare blades -which are half the cost of the complete saw-can be fixed into position. in a moment, if the original blade should get bent or broken. Such a saw is light, very efficient and inexpensive.
There are occasions, however, when it is impossible to get the bow in between the branches, and then it is preferable to use the Grecian pruning saw with its curved blade. Once again, it can be bought in three sizes: the 12 inch, 14 inch and 16 inch-the 14 inch being the most popular.
If suckering irons are impossible to obtain, the best thing to do is to use a well-worn shiny spade and sharpen its edge.
I then usually makes the upper saw cut about half-way through, then uses the finer saw edge below the branch to saw upwards, say, inch, and then completes the sawing above, using the U-teeth again.
These long-armed pruners are sold in different lengths: 5, 6, 7, 8 9, 10, 12 and 14 feet. The blades can be bought separately, should the original blade get damaged or become worn out.
All saw cuts should be made close to the trunk and they should be cleaned up afterwards with the sharp blade of a knife. The cambium layer, which lies just below the bark, will then be able to grow freely and the callus it produces will soon cover up the wound and give good protection.
